THE WORKSHOPS
General Information: The course is completed but new ones may be planned.
About:
PAINTING GREY 1 is the first of a new series of live online (delivered via Zoom) DRAWING and PAINTING workshops.
Each workshop is designed as a stand-alone one-day workshop, but with natural continuity to the next one, should you wish to do that too. You can enroll on as many or as few as you like. Taking part in the whole series will give you the best opportunity to develop your drawing and painting over time.
The content is appropriate for those who wish to follow a ‘semi-abstract’ path as well as those who prefer greater subject representation.
Who are the workshops for?
The workshops are for intermediate level painters who are already practicing some painting at home, but could do with some support to take their work to the next level……
What are the key aims of the workshops?
The workshops are aimed at helping you to develop your painting further, to get past the point where you might currently feel like you don’t know how to carry on and want to stop!
I will help you learn how to assess the problem and work out how to build on your work, with improved knowledge, control and confidence.
One of my personal teaching aims is for my students to feel able to apply what they have learnt to their own practice, when painting in their own time, not just during the class.
The workshop fee includes live feedback on the day (in a pair with another student, and as a whole group), as well as one additional opportunity for 1:1 feedback with me over the following two weeks.
PAINTING GREY SERIES
The three PAINTING GREY workshops are centred around one of the primary aspects of a drawing or painting, that of TONAL VALUE or light/dark contrast. Your ability to isolate this aspect and to manipulate it for high definition value contrast or more uniform value contrast is the key to interesting and compelling compositions.
In PAINTING GREY 1 you will make monochrome or grey-scale studies in charcoal and black and white acrylic paint, working initially from observation and focusing on light/dark value contrast. These studies will form the basis for exploration of value contrast and further studies.
In PAINTING GREY 2 you will look at the value aspect in colour, but with the focus on the ‘greys’ or neutral tones, known as chromatic greys. You will learn to mix a range of chromatic greys (and remember how to get there again in the future!). You can put your colour mixing into practice using the grey scale studies made in the first workshop (or at home).
PAINTING GREY 3 is designed to use the knowledge and practice gained so far. However, if this is the only workshop you can make, it can also be done as a stand-alone. In this workshop you will work with value contrast, proportion and placement, in a composition for different effect.
All the workshops will be backed up with suitable references, mainly to artists and images.
Items you will need for all of the classes:
You will need access to Zoom, ideally on a laptop or tablet. You could also use a phone, although it’s not ideal as it’s a little small!
Access to WhatsApp is very useful, but not essential. Once the workshop starts, I will create a WhatsApp group so that we can share ideas and tips with each other.
A phone with a camera is also very useful, but not essential.
For Painting Grey 1 you will also need:
A large drawing surface, ideally a board that can be moved (A2 or larger)
An easel is useful, but not essential.
Drawing paper (Approx. 180g or slightly more, –cartridge paper)
Charcoal, both willow and compressed charcoal
A rubber
