Contemporary Painting and Drawing, Develop your Practice.

This course is repeated on Monday afternoon.

The course provides sequential structured drawing and painting sessions aiming to unpick some of the theory behind a good and interesting composition in colour. You will work on studies and activities useful for representative and more abstracted contemporary painting, with the opportunity to apply your learning to personal project work.

Course subject matter will generally be extracted from still life and from your own sketches, studies and photographs, for use as a vehicle for understanding aspects of painting, rather than being the focus. Each session will be planned with a specific objective building on the previous one. ‘Ways in’ or strategies to foster abstraction will be discussed and demonstrated to help you begin and move on, especially at those sticking points when ‘binning it’ seems the only option. You will be encouraged to take an experimental approach with support from the tutor.

The course continues over two terms. You will get more from the course if you start at the beginning. It is challenging, suitable for intermediate to advanced students who would like help to develop their personal art practice. You will be expected to gather the required reference material and materials for each session and at times, to do some drawing at home.

Each Tuesday, I email you a session plan resume as a reminder of the processes and activities covered on the Monday. This includes an outline of what is needed for the following week. It is best to check this on the Tuesday in case there is something you need to do!

From September 2023 there is an optional ‘strand’ to the course for students who have worked with me for a year or more. This is an opportunity for you to work more independently on personal work. You provide a plan of action or proposal and direct yourselves with support from me. You may, of course, dip into the day’s planned objective. If you are interested, please contact me to discuss.

Summer Term Course

The summer term is usually more project based, not a direct follow on from terms 1 and 2.  You may use skills or techniques learned in the previous terms but it is not as important that you complete these. It is therefore a chance to try out one of my courses before committing to the longer one. You may need to supply drawings or reference material for week 1, so do keep in touch, regarding this.
